Animal Husbandary

Animal Husbandry activity is one of the programmes started by Sursagar Dairy for enhancement of milk production and to take care of farmers that they do not incur economic loss by want of health care service to their cattle holdings. In the beginning itself it was felt that cattle’s health is wealth of farmer as well as of the dairy as it brings growth to farmers and the organization. Sursagar Dairy has opened 6 veterinary centers in the Surendranagar district to provide better Animal healthcare services to farmers. Veterinary centers are located at 1. Sayla, 2. Chotila, 3. Dhrangadhra,4. Halvad,5. Patdi and 6. Wadhwan. Sursagar Dairy has a veterinary van and a team of skilled veterinary doctors for Animal healthcare services Milk production by dairy animals is a function of successful reproduction and total integration of animal health and nutrition.

Dairy recognizes all important aspects of dairy business since beginning and it has devised various solutions to take care of animal breeding, feeding, preserving animal health and technology adaption for growth and sustainable development of dairy farm business. in india up tp 50 billion cows and buffallows are suffering on dairy farms in unacceptable conditions. They suffer painful health problems and shorter lifespane due to over breeding ,poor housing ,confinement and over meditation. Our dairy provides veterinary employees with the essential knowledge and know to be able to respond quickly to protects animals, effectively and safely, when disaster happen. Our veterinary doctors learn all aspects of veterinary care needed to quickly respond to protect animals in emergency and disaster.

Our dairy provides the facilities of veterinary doctors for animal health to our customers.doctors visites at village level to city level for animal health.

Healthcare Service

Toll Free Number:18002333863

To restore health and production of sick animals in shortest possible time through a special visits on token charges (Member-visit-rs.150/-, Non member-visit-rs.300/-) for member farmers. We had started 24 hrs round the year Call Booking facility for emergency visits.

Veterinary Call Center Services

In an attempt to bring animal care closer to rural grassroots, the mobile wing of our dairy takes services such as pregnancy diagnosis, nutrition consultancy, fodder development, etc., at the farmers' doorstep. A team of senior vets (gynaecologist, physician, surgeon) conduct free camps and referral sessions, resolving critical cattle issues (detected in 70 % to 80% of the cases) in due course. Sursagar Dairy has a veterinary van and a team of skilled veterinary doctors for Animal healthcare services.

Health & Infertility Camps

Health and infertility camps are held at regular intervals. The milk suppliers (utpadaks) are encouraged to bring problem breeders, surgical cases as well as clinical cases to the camps for medical opinion given by senior veterinarians.

Animal Tagging

EID (Electronic Identification & Registration of Dairy Animals)

Main Objectives are :

To register the animal applying Bar Coded Plastic Ear Tag.

Accurate data recording of each and every event that had occurred on the animal viz. AI, PD, Calving, Vaccination, Deworming, Treatment etc.

Future Planning for Productivity Enhancement can be possible focussing on thrust areas. Focus areas are making available by analysis of data of an animal (Health, Breeding, Feeding etc.).

We can use Animal ID in each and every Project activities like PEP, CRP,RBP,PT.PB ,MCP for actual online data recording and Report generation.

A farmer can avail animal insurance facility on this ID also.

Implementation Process:

EID (100% Tagging & Registration of Dairy Animals) is a project in which we intend to cover almost all the dairy animals of our milk shed area. As on day animal status is being registered online into INAPH software (an official software of NDDB : Information Network for Animal Productivity and Health)

Breeding

The performance status of animal for different traits are directly depends on the genetic materials the animals having. Unless and until the improving the genetic material of breed the milk production could not be increased and to improve the breed quality the breeding of animal has to be given a prime importance. One has to go through the integrated breeding strategy with help of artificial insemination as a best tool to improve the breed quality.

Breeding

Treatment

To restore health and production of sick animals.

To preserve optimum animal health by P &C work.

To implement collaborative programs like FIP, PEP, CRP, RBP etc.

To implement Schemes for Animal Insurance.

Calf Rearing Program (CRP)

Young calves (female) are the backbone of dairy industry. Female calves of CBHF and Buffalo calved by A.I. are to be covered under this program. They are identified by applying a Bar Coded Ear Tag and registered into software specially designed for this program.

To safeguard a calf from many diseases Colostrum feeding to a day old calf is important for acquired immunity in form of Immunoglobulin from the colostrum. Milk Replacer is given after 7 days upto 3 months. Calf Starter is to fed to calves after 3 months of age till one year. By feeding this package of nutraceuticals, a buffalo calf comes in first heat at an age of 15-17 months and 9-11 months for cross bred calves. Average body weight gain of calves under this program is 250 – 350 grams per day. We have reared nearly 5000 calves from 150 DCSs last year under this program and are planning to increase DCS coverage to 400 this year.

Aims of the Calf Rearing Project:

To reduce the calf mortality.

To improvement in breed.

Now a day’s Farmer does not raise their new born calf and also there is 50 to 60% mortality rate and due to this we lost our valuable future generation. Due to the lack of information for raising calf we lost valuable calf with veterinary expense and additional man hours involved.

In field condition 60% animal bred by AI technique with high genetically potential dose for improvement of breed for future and on other hand after calving farmers is less interested for replacement stock with new born female calf and due to this we lost our future genetically potential breed.

Breeding Program(BP)

Pure Breeding is to be required to exploit the animal potential for milk production by increasing blood level into our existing cross bred cattle. Several superior females from our existing herd are to be identified for conducting this programme.

Superior females can be identified as per following parameters:

Mehsani Buffalo : Peak milk yield – more than 12 litre per day

Murrah Buffalo : Peak milk yield – more than 12 litre per day

Jafarabadi Buffalo : Peak milk yield – more than 16 litre per day

Kankrej Cow : Peak milk yield – more than 10 litre per day

HF / CB Cow : Peak milk yield – more than 18 litre per day

Gir Cow : Peak milk yield – more than 12 litre per day
